Twenty-Six Dirty Feet

Passage: John 13:1-17

Speaker: Doug Swagerty

Category: Sermon

Sermon Summary:
Jesus summarizes His whole ministry as a Servant. True Servants:

(1) Are Secure in God's Love
Jesus was utterly secure, knowing 4 things:
  1. His time had come (v1) - His suffering was part of God's plan
  2. The Father had put all things under his power (v3) - God was for Him
  3. He had come from God (v3) - His fellowship with God was unbroken
  4. He was returning to God (v3) - His suffering and death was not the end

Jesus' service was not motivated by fear, like a slave, or by wages, like a hireling, but by love, like a child.

(2) See Needs
At that dinner there were dirty feet in need of washing, and also ignorance and sin in need of truth and grace. Jesus took action to meet these needs.

(3) Are Motivated by Love
Jesus desired to reach 3 groups:
  1. The Needy - Disciples with dirty feet and dull minds
  2. The Proud - Disciples arguing over who is the greatest (cf Luke 22)
  3. The Traitors -
Disciples who Jesus knew would deny and forsake him.
Judas, probably in the seat of honor at Jesus' left, was washed by Jesus
Romans 5:8 - while we were sinners Christ died for us

(4) Are Rewarded
V12-17 - Jesus does not say, Now do for ME what I have done for you. He says, Do for OTHERS what I have done for you, and you will be blessed.
The greatest blessing: when you serve like Jesus, you'll find Him there with you.

Discussion Questions:
  1. Has anyone ever met a deep need of yours? How did it make you feel?
  2. What needs do you see around you that you hesitate to meet?
  3. How can the security of God's love motivate and empower you to meet these needs?
  4. Pray for each other.
