Thank You, from Alma Community Care

As part of the One Family Special Offering in the fall, Harbor City Church gave $2,000 to Alma Community Care. Launched out of Servant Church (PCA) in 2017, Alma Community Care is a faith-based nonprofit providing comprehensive mental health and education resources to the families and residents of Greater Logan Heights, a predominantly Hispanic inner city neighborhood with significant economic and social challenges, located just a few blocks from Harbor City Church.

The Special Offering is funding free monthly parenting seminars led by mental health professionals, taught in English and Spanish, and help provide scholarships for neighborhood Moms to receive individual and group therapy.

Helping a Sister church Fill and Hand out Backpacks in Barrio Logan

On Wednesday, September 20, we joined Servant Church in a really cool outreach event.

Servant meets each Sunday at Burbank Elementary School in Logan Heights, an area with the highest number of children per capita in San Diego. Each fall, they raise money to purchase backpacks and fill them with school supplies to bless every child and family in the school.

Here's a word from their pastor, Chris Sandoval:

"We are so thankful for Harbor City Church’s participation in this event! The financial support was amazing. It’s tough for a church starting out to have the resources needed to bless our neighbors and neighborhood. But the volunteers who came were fantastic! They had great attitudes, and there were so many of them! They really free our church up to be able to directly interact with the people who we were trying to bless. They gave us the chance to change this from a “Hand Out Event” to a relationship-building event where we were able to share with them the love of Christ.

And this is from one of the volunteers from Harbor:

"The event was one for the books!. I loved the part where before we started to set up and while we were unloading, pastor Chris took some time to pray for the team and the people coming.

"I also remember that when my family first moved to the US (from Haiti), we were those people and we were so thankful to people who did stuff like this where we were blessed with either backpacks, or school supplies etc. It felt good to be used by God when it came full circle.

"And also, Isaac from Servant Church was very impressed by how many people we had coming from Harbor. Every time one of us showed up, he would be like "another one?"!

"Yesterday was definitely an experience and I'm glad that our two churches can come together like this to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Looking forward already to the next one!"
