Walking Into the Temple

Passage: Acts 3:1-10

Speaker: Omar Ortiz

Series: Acts: Windows into the Missional Church

Category: Sermon

Summary:

(1) The lame man is a picture of total helplessness
  • Physical, financial, vocational, emotional (an honor/shame culture that stigmatized physical disability), spiritual (he is outside while others are going in; he was possibly not even allowed to enter the temple)

(2) The Turning Point: "In the Name of Jesus..."
  • The lame man asked for money, but his deeper need was to be healed.
  • Peter acts not in his own authority but in the authority of Jesus
    • Jesus is at work to bring about
      • Substantial healing - The work God is using us to bring about in the present world, and a picture of what is coming.
      • Perfect healing - What is coming; the work God will bring to completion in the new heavens and earth.
  • The lame man is a picture of us—
    • We are totally helpless, but we can have hope in all circumstances
      • Because we know God will finally bring perfect healing
      • Because we know God can bring substantial healing to any brokenness we experience now.

(3) Resolution: The lame man stands and enters the Temple
  • His healing is substantial—real blessing in the here and now, but not complete (i.e. this man was still subject to the effects of sin, sickness, and physical death). His healing is a sign of the perfect healing that is to come.
  • Peter is a picture of us—
    • His actions demonstrate how gospel community is lived out in the midst of the brokenness in the world:
      • Faith expressing itself in action: Healed people bringing substantial healing in Jesus' name
      • Each of us is the lame man walking, going into the Temple; each of us is a walking Temple, going out to heal others

Group Discussion:
  1. How does thinking of the effect of sin in this world as “brokeness” (physically, financially, vocationally, emotionally, spiritually, etc.) help you think about what the gospel can do in our lives and world?
  2. How have you been reminded recently of the brokenness of our world? How have you experienced brokenness yourself?
  3. How have you seen Jesus bring substantial healing either in your own life or in the lives of others?
