We're in this Together

Passage: Galatians 6:1-5

Speaker: Steven Cooper

Series: 5: Following Jesus in the City

Category: Sermon

Message Summary:
Harbor City Church’s second value is We are Growing in Community. The Bible is clear—we can’t live the Christian life alone. Jesus could not do it alone. We aren’t meant to do it alone. Instead, the Bible teaches us that we are in this together. We all need spiritual friendships that will encourage and challenge us to be the best versions of ourselves and to stay faithful to God. The Gospel gives us an experience of God that creates the most encouraging community that can assure us of God’s promises in the gospel AND challenge us to live those promises out in a transformed life.

Discussion Questions:

  1. How do these Scripture passages (below) affect your understanding of the importance of Christian community?
  2. In what specific ways does the gospel create the BEST kind of community?
  3. "Although we have all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus (Eph 1), some blessings will not manifest apart from community." What are some specific examples of blessings that can only be experienced in community?
  4. Pastor Steven said we should have a few others with whom we regularly get real. If you have this kind of community, how did it form? If you don't have it, what obstacles are keeping you from it?
  5. Pray for each other.

Scripture:

Luke 22:41-44
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed,  42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."  43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.  44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Matthew 4:11
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Luke 9:30-31
30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah,  31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Romans 15:14
14 I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another.

Galatians 6:1-5
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.  2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.  4 But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.  5 For each will have to bear his own load.
